Life in the Blood

Leviticus 17

I pray blessings on you as you read.

(v. 11) "For the life of a creature is in the blood, and I have given it to you to make atonement for yourselves on the altar; it is the blood that makes atonement for one's life."

My Thoughts

The life of a creature is in the blood. How true that statement. It is very literal: if your blood stops flowing, you will die. The very next verse, God tells the Israelites that they not to eat blood. God says that the blood is to make atonement for ourselves.

In the times when God had told this to the Israelites, it was a custom that sacrifices would be made. There were different kinds of sacrifices. Burnt offerings, thank offerings, guilt offerings, grain, drink, peace, sin offerings. Many different kinds. Hard to keep track of, huh? These offerings were all a way for the Israelites to have and to keep a right relationship with God. Probably what you think of first when you hear (or see in this case!) the word sacrifice, is killing. Yes, that happened, they would kill animals for sacrifices.

It was the blood of the animals that would make atonement for their sins or for a life. A life for a life kind of thing. The sacrifices of the animals would not do forever because they were not perfect. The blood was not perfect. We no longer make sacrifices to God, and we no longer need to. Jesus was the ultimate sacrifice. God gave His Son, Jesus Christ, as a sacrifice for us. Jesus, being perfect in every way as God the Son, was the final sacrifice for all of us. His blood has made atonement for all of us, from then until the end.

Jesus has taken the place of all animals so that none ever need to be sacrificed again. He has also taken our place. The reason for His sacrifice is that we have sinned. We are all sinners, and no one is an exception. The wages of sin is death. So our sins need to be atoned for, with blood because our lives are on the line. We deserve death for our sins, but Jesus has paid the price for us. Surely there is power in the blood of Jesus. His sacrifice was one of great love for us all, whether we choose to follow Him or not, He will always love us. He will always love you.
